Horticulture - What is Horticulture | Definition, Meaning and Branches of Horticulture

 Hello friends today we will talk about Horticulture and its branches.

 So first let us know what is Horticulture ie Horticulture?

 Horticulture :-

 Horticulture is a branch of agricultural science.

 Horticulture is derived from of two Latin words, first - 'Hortus' and second 'Cultura',

 in which Hortus means Garden and Culture means to cultivate crops and plants.  

Thus, horticulture refers to the cultivation of plants or crops in the garden.

 Thus it can be defined as-

 Horticulture, is the branch of agriculture under which the plants or crops grown in the garden are studied.  Such as - the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and flowers, which can be grown separately or all together in the garden.

 Definition of Horticulture -

 The word Horticulture means "Garden Culture" or Cultivation of garden Crops and plants and this implies the Cultivation within rather restricted areas.

 Branches of Horticulture :-

 There are mainly three branches of Horticulture :-

• Vegetable Production or Olericulture
• Fruit Production or Pomology
• Flower Production or Floriculture

 1. Vegetable Production or Olericulture :-

 Olericulture is derived from of two Latin words -

 Oleris + Cultura = Olericulture

 Oleris = Pot herbs / vegetables

 cultura = cultivating

Olericulture Means :- Olericulture is that branch of horticulture, under which the cultivation of vegetables or vegetables is studied.

 2. Fruit production or pomology :-

 Pomology is formed by the combination of Latin and Greek words -

 Pomum + logus = Pomology

 Pomum (Latin word) = fruit

 Logus (Greek word) = to study.

Pomology means :- That branch of horticulture in which the cultivation of fruit plants i.e. fruit production is studied.  It is called Pomology.  With the help of this branch of horticulture, we can know more about fruits and the importance of fruits.

 3. Flower production or floriculture :-

 Floriculture is derived from of two Latin words -

 Flower + Cultura = Floriculture.

 flower = flower

 Cultura = cultivating.

Floriculture means :-  That branch of horticulture, under which flowering plants or ornamental, ornate plants are grown and studied.  It is called Floriculture.  This branch of horticulture is also known as Ornamental Gardening.
