What is Insect Pest ?
All those organisms, the group of organisms that cause economic harm to the crop, the group of that organism is called pest.
Now you guys do not understand that all the groups of animals that destroy the crops like a herd of elephants also harm the crops but cannot call it pest.
That is, those groups of organisms whose damage to the crops causes economic loss to the farmer. This pest damages the sown crops or stored grains. And different types of insects or organisms depend on different crops. Such an organism is called a pest, Harmful insects and rats for crop.
Definition of Pest -
Any living organism which causes noticable (economic) loss or damage to human being or his belongings is known as Pest.
Definition of insect Pest -
An insect which causes economic loss to crops or n nuisance and health hazard to man, his live stock or other belongings is known as Insect Pest.
Before knowing the type of Insect Pest, it is necessary to know the concept of economic decision level threshold for the Pest population.
Economic decision level for Pest population concept of threshold are :-
Types of Insect Pest :-
The types of some pests are given below:-
● Minor and Major Pests :- Those pests which cause less than 5 - 10% damage to crops are called minor pests and those pests which cause 10% or more damage to crops are called major pests.
Minor Pest - GEP (General Equilibrium Position) lies below EIL (Economic Enjury Level) and Damage Boundary.
Under favourable environmental condition the population may cross EIL and DB for a short interval end a single application of insecticide is usually enough to prevent damage. Example - Thrips, Mites and Sugarcane mealy bug.
Major Pest :- GEP is close to EIL but economically damage avoided by timely intervention. Example - Sucking paste of rice and cotton.
Key pest :- These are most sever and damaging Pest GEP lies well about the DB and EIL.
Example - cotton boll worm gram pod borer etc.
● Regular pests :- Those pests that come regularly on a crop and are in large numbers. This type of pest is very difficult to control.
Effect specific seasonal crops like Cereals, pulses, fruits through many generations during the crop period.
Example: - Rice Stem borer, ladyfinger and reflux fruit borer, mango hopper, chilli thrips etc.
● Occasional pests :- The pests that sometimes come on crops.
Example - Mango stem borer insect, locust (mothus), wheat heliothis, etc.
● Seasonal pest :- These are the pests which come in a particular part in a particular season. It mainly depends on the climate and season.
Example :- hairy caterpillar on cotton
● Persistent pests :- Pests which are found on a crop throughout the year.
Example: - Termites, scale and mealy bugs etc.
● Sporadic pests :- Such pests are found scattered somewhere in the crop. Which can be less time or sometimes more effective.
Population of this insect is usually negligible but in certain year under favourable environment condition they appear epidemic and crossing many time over EIL and DB.
Example: - paddy root weevil (paddy root weevil), white backed plant hopper, White grub, Hairy Caterpillar etc.
